Read a Case Study for How Our SAP was integrated into existing Campus Services
Journal of American College Health

What is a Student Assistance Program (SAP)?
Modeled after the highly successful Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) that companies offer to their valued employees, the SAP is a specialized support service that has been developed with students' needs in mind and it's designed to offer maximum support to existing on-campus counseling services:
  • 1 year coverage (12 months from enrollment)
  • Confidential 24/7 phone support with a licensed Mental Health Counselor
  • Unlimited free calls
  • Referrals to college and university counseling centers
  • Up to 6 paid face-to-face counseling sessions (optional)
  • Free legal consultation and referral
  • Free financial consultation and referral
  • Translation service

Are all students covered?
Colleges and universities are encouraged to seek details for providing SAP coverage to ALL enrolled students including graduate, undergraduate, distance learners, and part-time students. This ensures maximum legal protection and additional financial resources dedicated to supporting the existing counseling function of each institution. ReconnectingU has also designed a model for schools to offer individual coverage. Thus, allowing students and parents aware of pre-existing concerns an opportunity to increase personal support.

How does an SAP help Counseling Centers?
  • SAP refers students to their college counseling center as a first option, providing on-campus programs with an additional basis for student awareness and access
  • Counseling Centers may receive provider compensation (once registered as an Approved Provider)
  • 24/7/365 provides support when schools are not in session or services are limited
  • Phone support limits referrals to Campus Police when centers are closed
  • Some students may prefer to initiate their search for help over the phone and do so at odd hours - an advantage for schools with limited or non-existing phone support
  • The SAP can bring additional resources that make it possible to expand on-campus services
  • Distance Learners will be provided support services to help ensure continuation of enrollment
  • Commuter students will have more flexible access to support
  • Supporting counseling centers receive professionally prepared promotional resources to help encourage students to seek counseling

How does the SAP help Institutions?
  • A percentage of all SAP revenues will be returned to the Institution for Counseling Center purposes.
  • SAP provides Institution with legal indemnification.
  • Counseling Centers will receive provider compensation (once registered as an Approved Provider) and be paid for counseling sessions administered to enrolled students. This money can be used to increase Counseling Center staff.
  • Turnkey 24/7 programming offered to students without direct cost to Institution
  • SAP shifts mental health responsibility back to students and parents

Who provides the Services?
The SAP program does not seek to be a substitute for services on campus, but rather to supplement those services. We believe that on site services are in the best position to understand and care for students. However, we also know that most counseling centers have limited human and financial resources. It's difficult to be available 24/7 (especially when school is not in session), or to attend to students' needs the way you would always like. That's why we've developed a partnership with one of the nation's leading providers of behavioral health assistance and designed a program specifically for the college population. We've also made it available round-the-clock. The company is called ENI, based in New York State, and all of their counselors are behavioral health professionals.
  • Students enrolled in ENI telephonic support only, will be given on-campus Counseling Center contact information and encouraged to make an appointment if appropriate
  • Students in need of a face-to-face counseling option will be given a choice to schedule sessions with a campus provider or through a local provider. In each instance, SAP services will contact the provider and arrange for that provider to directly contact the student and schedule a meeting unless otherwise arranged with campus provider. In every case the student talks directly with the counselor to make his or her own appointment.

Is this telephone counseling?
No. The SAP is designed to be quality telephone support - a kind of service that has proven to be of enormous value to millions (through their EAP at work). We believe that there is no substitute for in-person, face-to-face counseling. That's why we always refer students to local professional providers. That's also why we call our company "ReconnectingU"

Who is ENI?
ENI or Employee Networks Incorporated has been offering Employee Assistance Programs for more than 20 years. ENI is NOT a Managed Care provider. To learn more about ENI, visit http://ENIweb.com/indexeni.htm.

Intake Staff / Care Manager Qualifications
All care managers are required to have a Masters level or higher degree with a license to practice in the state and a minimum of three years experience in the field. All are under professional supervision.

ENI care managers benefit from numerous support systems in their daily decision making including a propriety level of care software system which assists in determining care needs beyond the SAP level of service.

All clinical documentation is maintained in a state-of-the-art software system - ENI's MIS system, eCuraTM. ENI processes are HIPPAA compliant.

What about liability?
ENI agrees to assume all risk of liability. ENI indemnifies, protects, holds harmless and releases participating colleges, universities and any participating campus counseling groups from and against any and all losses and reasonable attorneys fees occasioned in performance of SAP services by ENI or its contractors to the limits of ENI's liability insurance coverage.

What about state licensing laws?
As the SAP does not itself provide counseling and as it always refers students to licensed providers in the state where the student is living or attending school, the SAP program is fully compliant with all current laws governing the delivery of counseling services.

How much does it cost?
ReconnectingU is committed to providing the highest quality possible at the lowest prices. College is expensive and our ability to make this valuable service affordable is critical. That's why we've eliminated the frills, leveraged the power of thousands of students, and tried to provide the right kind of service just at the moment when it's needed most.
  • Care Plus Package: $22.00 per student/yr
Service provides confidential round-the-clock phone support from licensed professionals and no limit on the number of calls with the additional benefit of up to 6 face-to-face counseling sessions (a $500-$640 value).
