| When I took a part-time job and started living off-campus, my course work fell apart. I couldn't concentrate or sleep, and I was always IRRITABLE and angry. - Leah, sophomore year |
After two years of straight A's, I couldn't finish assignments anymore. I felt exhausted but couldn't sleep, and drank A LOT. I couldn't enjoy life like my friends did anymore. - John, junior year |
I've always been anxious and never had much confidence. College was harder than I expected, and then my parents divorced, which was traumatic for me. After a while, all I did was cry, sleep, and feel waves of panic. - Marta, freshman year |
They are college students who got depressed... got treatment...and got better.
Students may also seek help for these concerns:
Academic Problems…Anxiety…Substance Abuse…Eating Disorders…Unplanned Pregnancy…Sexual Orientation…Credit Problems…Suicidal Thoughts…Sexual Assault…Divorced Parents…Roommate Troubles…Relationship Issues…Homesickness…Stress...Adjustment to School...
Myth: I am the only one that doesn't have it all together.
Fact: As you walk the campus and observe other students it may seem as though everyone else feels sure of themselves. Everyone else has friends. Everyone else has direction. Everyone else is confident. Everyone else is without troubles or hassles. This misperception is common among college and university students. It has its roots in one of our more powerful social norms. We all wear a 'public mask' to protect a certain social image. This 'public mask' communicates a sense of self-assuredness to those with whom we come in contact. It often belies the inner turmoil that we all experience from time to time. Therefore, you are likely to be unaware that many other students also struggle with personal concerns. Think about it, how many people are truly aware of the issues troubling you? Probably very few.
Where can you seek help? Many schools offer counseling and support services to help their students develop strategies for coping with difficult problems. In many cases these services are free. Not all schools offer the same services and access may be limited to business hours. Check your school's website for available services and hours of operation.
If you aren't comfortable seeking help on campus, can't find the services you are looking for or simply prefer to 'talk to someone' over the phone first…you may be interested in this Student Assistance Program.
What is a Student Assistance Program or SAP?
Modeled after the VERY popular Employee Assistance Program or EAP for businesses and corporations, the Student Assistance Program (SAP) provides enrolled participants with:
- 1 year coverage (12 months from enrollment)
- Confidential 24/7 phone support with a licensed Mental Health Counselor
- 24/7 Crisis Intervention
- Unlimited telephonic support services
- Referrals to College and University Counseling Centers
- Up to 6 Paid Face-to-Face counseling sessions (optional)
- Free legal consultation and referral
- Free financial consultation and referral
How do I use this SAP?
You will be provided with a wallet sized access card available for you to use whenever you need it... late night, weekendsw, whenever! Or, if you are enrolled in the SAP Care Plus Package, you may schedule a face-to-face session with a counselor in your area.
Simply call the 800 number and start talking. A licensed mental health counselor will take over from there. You may decide that scheduling a few more conversations by phone is all you need…or if you are enrolled in the SAP Care Plus Package, a face-to-face session may be scheduled. It's up to you!
Who will you schedule face-to-face sessions with?
You have the option to meet with your campus counselor (if available) or a local counselor who is part of the ENI network.
Why is the SAP so inexpensive?
Fortunately, not everyone who is enrolled in the SAP will need to use available services. This helps to keep expenses down.
Is the SAP ONLY for College Students?
NO! Experts believe that many problems begin in High School and if not properly addressed will result in difficulties at college.
How do I/We enroll?
A parent may enroll their child in the Student Assistance Program or the student may enroll on his or her own.
